The Moment Leaders Stop Waiting for Permission

There is often a defining moment in leadership development when something shifts. It is not a promotion. It is not a new qualification. It is not even a new skill.

It is the moment someone stops waiting for permission to lead.

Towards the end of a recent aspirant senior leaders programme that we delivered, participants described a transformation that many aspiring leaders will recognise. They joined the programme looking to develop new capabilities, but what emerged was something deeper: a growing belief in their own ability to influence, contribute and lead beyond the boundaries of their current role.

“I have realised how much more strategic I am than I previously realised… seeing the bigger picture and working out where my sphere of influence is.”

This insight captures a challenge faced by many emerging leaders. Too often, talented individuals assume leadership begins when they are given a more senior title. In reality, leadership often starts much earlier. It begins when people recognise the influence they already have and use it intentionally.

Participants described increased confidence, stronger clarity of purpose and a greater ability to influence change. One reflected that they were now:

“Able to advocate… with much better clarity and confidence than I would have done prior to the programme.”

Another highlighted:

“Increased confidence and being able to use core values to influence change.”

What is particularly striking is that this growth was fuelled not only by learning, but by reflection, challenge and connection with peers. Through these experiences, participants began to see themselves differently.

The lesson is simple but powerful : Leadership is rarely something that is granted. More often, it is something that is claimed.

The most significant development journey is not becoming someone else. It is recognising the leader you already are.
